Mrs. Mary Emanuel Kennedy

  Miss Emanuel was born in 1833 in Mobile and died June 28, 1894 in Mobile.  Her Father was Jonathan Emanuel and her Mother was Isabella Hunter King.  She married Joshua Kennedy Jr. , a grocer by trade.   He was born in 1828 in Mobile and died was killed in 1862 at the Battle of Seven Pines.  She then married William Barnwell. He was born in 1822 in New York and died May 15, 1898 in Mobile.  He was a Cotton Factor.

  Joshua Kennedy built a house at 607 Government Street in 1857.  Mary gave it to her sister Virginia Emanuel Mitchell in exchange for the Emanuel family home at 251 Government Street.  The Kennedy House is currently owned by the American Legion and is in very poor condition.  The Emanuel House was destroyed to make way for the Admiral Semmes Hotel.

  Mary Emanuel Kennedy Barnwell established the Barnwell Memorial Fund at Christ Episcopal Church The fund was comprised of a store on Commerce Street, a house on Government Street and some personal property.

  The income from these gifts was to be used for the benefit of the Church.  Among the property donated was her family silver and personal jewelry.  These were melted down and made into an alter cross.  The jewelry was used to make a gold chalice studded with over 200 jewels.
