Mrs. Juliet Ann Opie Hopkins

 Arlington National Cemetery

  Arlington, Virginia

Mrs. Hopkins began working early in the war with the Mobile Hospital system.  She was appalled with the poor treatment the Soldiers were receiving and coerced the Governor into mandating proper standards of care and hygiene.  She was given, at one point, virtual control of the Alabama Military Hospital System and Alabama

quickly developed the best medical care system in the Confederacy.  She then went to Richmond and worked

closely with the National Government to improve the overall system.

After the war she went to work with the U.S. Government and was largely responsible for the modern military health care system.

She had the charm,  drive and intelligence to change the system and her husband, Arthur Francis Hopkins, who was a signer of the first Alabama Constitution, a former Alabama Attorney General, and a very successful attorney, had the money and influence to get her an audience with the people of power.  Arthur Francis Hopkins is buried in Magnolia Cemetery.
